Who is encouraged to apply?

The residency is geared to those who can benefit from the working environment provided. Self-directed visual artists and writers in early, mid-career to mature career stages, who find this quiet space inspiring, will be encouraged to apply. Applicants are not judged on perceived artistic ability. We may be able to accommodate your significant other for a reduced rate.

Where is the residency located?

Newcastle is about 2 hours north of Dublin and 1 hour south of Belfast. We recommend flying into Dublin or Belfast and taking a bus to Newcastle.

The magical Mountains of Mourne are our backdrop and the Irish Sea is our vista.

What should I bring?

Residents must bring their own art materials. Studio requirements will be discussed with each individual artist.

How many artists are present at a time?

Depending on studio requirements, there could be 4-6 artists/writers present. All artists will receive spacious studio space with walls, tables and lighting.

How long are the residencies?

Residencies have a minimum of 1 week, 2 weeks is the recommended stay.

When are the residencies offered?

The dates are: March 14-28, 2025

One or two-week residencies are being offered. Two weeks are strongly recommended, due to possible jet lag and personal orientation into life in Newcastle.

How much does it cost?

The cost per week in 2024 was $1600. Two weeks was $3000. We are doing our best to keep the cost as low as possible for 2025.

What is included?

A private room and bath in an apartment shared with another artist(s). Apartments have a kitchen and living room and are situated in town where you can walk to the studio, shops, exhibits, cafes, and restaurants.

Dinners are included. Newcastle has many pubs and restaurants where we will be welcomed by some of the friendliest people you will ever meet!. Dinner is an important time to gather as a community. Breakfast and lunch are not included. Have your cappuccino and pastry at the local cafe or go for the full Irish breakfast! The apartments are fully equipped for any meal prep you care to do.

What will a day look like?

Whether you’re an early riser or like to sleep-in, it’s all up to you. Have breakfast at the apartment or in one of the many cafes. Go straight to the studio and create, OR, go for a hike in the mountains, stroll on the beach, walk the promenade. This is your time! We will meet up for dinner in a special location each night. Take in some Irish music at one of the pubs. Then get some rest!

Our artist residency offers residents the time to relax, rejuvenate, and draw inspiration from the beautiful scenery and the friendly people to inspire your own art. The lively pubs, Irish music, and the allure of the rolling sea right outside your door will surely ignite your imagination. If you are interested, please inquire below.

You will be immersed in the village life. Walk from your apartment to the studio/gallery where we will be hosted by Spy Pond Gallery. Enjoy meals at the pubs along the promenade with the locals and fellow artists.
